About 23 lakh primary and secondary students of Barishal division, including in Barishal city and all the six districts, will get free books on January 1, 2020.
The National Curriculum Textbook Board (NCTB) has already sent the books to schools. The divisional primary and secondary education office has already distributed these books to schools, madrasas, and vocational institutes in the city and villages.

According to sources, there are about 1,121,275 primary students and 11.45 lakh secondary students in 8,974 educational institutions in Barishal division.

All the schools are now in a festive mood, organising a book festival programme.

Sources said that the book distribution ceremony will be inaugurated at the Barisal Primary School auditorium,  Government Sadar Girls’ School, and Government Zilla School on the morning of January 1.

The sources also said that there is a demand for 22,796,582 copies of books in 8,973 educational institutions, including primary and high schools, madrasas, and vocational institutes, in Barisal division.

Divisional directorate office sources say secondary and primary level schools, including madrasas, received 100 per cent of the books by December 30.

Regional DD (secondary schools) in Barisal, Md Moksedul Islam said that the department has given first priority to the coastal belt. The schools of the city would receive the books any time, he added.

SM Faruk, DD of divisional primary education office, said that there are enough books in stock to meet any crisis. “We, the officials of the divisional office, visit different villages to ensure the books reach the educational institutions,” he added.

He also said the department is closely monitoring the book distribution work from the beginning. He further said that almost all students would get new books at the scheduled time.

City school authorities have sent the books to all class teachers and they are ready for distribution among the students. The school authorities are also chalking out programmes for the book distribution function.

But different high schools of the city are yet to receive all the books. Nazma Begum, assistant headmaster of Halima Khatun Girls' High School, said the maximum number books have reached the school by December 25. But five books of Class VI are still on the way, she added.
